Potential Energy Surfaces . . . and Reaction/Activation Energies

A reaction energy (E) corresponds to the difference in energies between two equilibrium geometries on the same potential energy surface. This yields the "thermochemistry" of reaction.

An activation energy (E) corresponds to the difference in energies between an equilibrium geometry and a transition-state geometry which are "connected" on a potential energy surface. This yields the "kinetics" of reaction.
